Nigeria's Most Influential Medical Doctors

Take it or leave it, these leaders, medical titans and icons as you may call them, have made their marks. They are doctors other doctors listen to. Recognized both home and abroad and certainly mentors to up coming generation of doctors, we present them to you in no particular order:   

Dr. Olusegun Mimiko: the Executive Governor of Ondo State, Nigeria.
Born on 3 October 1954, Dr. Mimiko attended higher school certificate (HSC) at the Gboluji Grammar School, Ile-Oluji. After which he gained admission into the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), Ile-Ife. In 1976, he bagged a Bsc in Health Science. He earned the MB; CH.B (Bachelor of Medical, Bachelor of Surgery) in 1980 and he is registered with the Nigeria Medical and Dental Council as a medical practitioner. 
As a medical doctor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko worked in different establishments between 1980 and 1981. He was a house officer with the Ondo State Health Management Board under whose auspices he worked at the General (now State Specialist) Hospital, Apo-Ekiti (now in Ekiti state). He had a stint with the Nigeria Naval College (NNS Onura), Onne, Port Harcourt, between 1981 and 1982, as a youth corper. He returned to join the service of the Ondo State Health Management Board as medical official in the general (now state specialist) hospital, Ondo, in 1982. from late 1983 to 1984, Dr. Mimiko had his initial taste of private medical practice by working at different times as a medical official at Apagun Clinic, Yaba, Lagos; and as the Acting Medical Director, Alleluyah Hospital, Oshodi, Lagos. He returned to public service for another year between April 1984 and February 1985 (again with the Ondo State Health Management Board) before finally going into full private medical practice with the setting up of the MONA MEDI-CLINICS with headquarters in Ondo town. Dr Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan: the Executive Governor Delta State, Nigeria
Born on 22 October 1954 in Warri North Local Government Area in Delta State of Itsekiri origin. He attended Federal Government College, Warri (1968–1974), and the University of Benin (1975–1980) earning a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) degree, and a Diploma in Anaesthesia. He is married, with two children.
Emmanuel Uduaghan began work in 1983 at the Delta Steel Company, as a medical officer. From 1989 to 1994, he worked in a number of hospitals including Westend Hospital,Warri; Benoni Hospitals, Benin City and Shell Hospital, Ogunu, where he was a Consultant Anaesthesiologist. In 1994 he set up in private medical practice. He was held the positions in the Nigerian Medical Association in Warri, Bendel State and Delta State. He was also active in the Junior Chamber International (Jaycees) leadership development organization.




Professor C.O. Onyebuchi Chukwu: Honourable Minister of Health of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Born on 22nd of April 1962 in Yaba, Lagos, Nigeria. He hails from Afikpo North in Ebonyi, State. 

A renowned professor of medicine with a post graduate specialist training in orthopaedic surgery, he is a fellow of West African college of Surgeons and a fellow of International college of Surgeons.
In 1974, had his First School Leaving Certificate Examination from Federal Government College Sokoto and a MBBS graduate of University of Lagos (1986).

He was Head, Accident and Emergency Department, Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Nigeria (1996-1998); Senior Lecturer in Surgery/Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Abia State University/Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Aba, Nigeria (1999-2000); Head, Department of Surgery, Abia State University/Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Aba, Nigeria (1998-2000). He became an Honorary Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital Abakaliki in 2000; Chairman Medical Advisory Committee Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, Nigeria (2000-2003); Senior Lecturer in Surgery/Senior Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon in Ebonyi State University/Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, Nigeria (2000 – 2007)and the Chief Medical Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (2003-2008).
In 2007, he was appointed a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Ebonyi State University Abakaliki; the Deputy Provost, College of Health Sciences, Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki (4th November, 2008 – Date) and a Visiting Professor of Surgery, University of Nigeria Enugu Campus (with effect from 6th April 2010). He was appointed the Honourable Minister of Health of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in April 2010.

During his tenure as Chief Medical Director of the Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital (2003 – 2008), the hospital witnessed phenomenal growth in personnel, physical structures, utilities, clinical services, the number of clinical departments accredited for internship and residency training, and the number of staff who underwent in-service training. The management team, with the cooperation of staff, raised the hospital to a level of excellence that earned it the reputation as ‘the most functional teaching hospital in Nigeria’ and made it a major centre for undergraduate and postgraduate medical training in the country.



Emeritus Professor Oladipo Akinkugbe: Former Vice-Chancellor of the University of lIorin; former Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University; former visiting professor of Medicine at Harvard University; former Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of council of the University of Port Harcourt as well as Emeritus Professor of Medicine, University of Ibadan.

Born in Ondo on 17 July 1933. He attended Government College Ibadan (1946-51), University College Ibadan (now University of Ibadan) (1951-55), University of London (1955-58), University of Liverpool (1960), and Oxford University (1962-64). He became Professor of Medicine, University of Ibadan (1968); Dean of Medicine (1970-74); Visiting Professor of Medicine at Harvard (1974-75); Oxford (1981-82) and Cape Town (1995); Principal, then Vice Chancellor, University of Ilorin (1975-78); Vice Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University (1978-79); Pro-Chancellor, University of Port Harcourt (1986-90); Foundation Chair, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and Chairman, Management Board, University College Hospital, Ibadan (2000-2003).




Professor Umaru Shehu.

Born on December 8, 1930 in Maiduguri, Nigeria. He attended Elementary School, Maiduguri 1935-1940; Middle School, Maiduguri 1941-1943; Kaduna College, Kaduna 1944-1947; University College Ibadan 1948-1953; and was at the University of Liverpool between 1953-1956, and 1966-1967. Professor Shehu holds MBBS (London), IRCF (London), MRCS (England), DPH (Liverpool), FMCPH, MFCM, FFCM (UK), FFCM (Nigeria), FAS, FWACP, DFMC (Nigeria).


He was appointed Vice Chancellor, University of Nigeria, Nsukka 1978-1980. He also worked with the World Health Organization as Short Term Consultant (Working Group on Health Services and Manpower Development Mechanism) in Geneva, September 1970; Appointed Temporary Adviser, October 1970; Short Term Consultant, 1971-1973; Consultant (Technical Discussions), 24th WHO Regional Committee for Africa 1974; National WHO Program Coordinator/Representative in Nigeria 1980-1985; Director, WHO Sub-Regional Health Development Office 111, 1985-1989; WHO Representative to Ethiopia, 1990.At the University of Maiduguri, Professor Shehu was appointed Honorary Consultant Physician since 1991 to date, and became Professor Emeritus in 2000.
